WordPress Backup Plugin – Introducing BackupBuddy

After loosing most of my content in my last blog (sigh) I thought I do a little post about the method that I have chosen to backup this blog, and indeed most of my websites.

WordPress Backup Made easy

There are lots of plugins out there that do simple backups and even help you mail them to a designated e-mail address. These backups are great and are simple to use so it begs the question why do anything else.

A wordpress installation consists of your MySQL database (db) and the files themselves. What most backup solutions do is to concentrate on WordPress db backups. However this approach assumes that only your database file will be lost. A restoration of your data base gives you a standard blog, none of the customization that takes a few hours at least to do and to get right.

I have come across an Automatic wordpress backup solution called BackupBuddy. Its a premium wordpress backup plugin and is absolutely fantastic. Not only does it backups your files but also backs up everything else including widgets, themes and plugins. There is included integrations with services like drop box and Amazon cloud storage to simple things like ftp the resulting backup to a designated server. Everything about your backup is customizable to the number of backups you keep to usage of different export functionality depending on your settings (you might prefer to backup files every week, but only upload it to Amazon cloud storage once a month as an example)

BackupBuddy Restore Feature

Backup WordPress Easily   Backup Buddy makes wordpress backup and restoration a breeze, I have done a simple test on the restoration features and its really very very simple, and effectively comes down to three major steps.

Step 1:- Place the backup file and a php script in public_html folder

Step 2:- Create a standard wordpress database

Step 3:- Navigate in your browser to where you php script is http://www.mydomain.com/importbuddy.php (as and example) and run it

The simplicity of this plugin has meant that I consider this to be a must have plugin especially if you have multiple sites. Especially as I am moving away from developing my sites on the actual domain first. I have now got a test domain/server where all of my development occurs. After which I use this method to easily export my entire site to actual domain.

Overall I am very happy with this purchase. I have the developer licence for this, and has definitely been one of the best plugin purchase of the year for me.

Backup up quite a few sites already, so easy to use and takes no time for the backups.

Great to see you back up and running Mansoor.

Quick word of advice on backups. Where I work, we have 3 (that’s right three) disaster recovery weeks per year. On these weeks various members of staff are placed in a specialised data centre with the backup tapes and the aim is that within a week they can restore our entire IT infrastructure and get back to business as usual. I can’t stand having to travel to the other side of London to work our way meticulously through the restore scripts, but I can’t deny that it serves a very useful purpose.

You’d imagine that with the frequency on which we do this it would be a simple procedure, but it rarely goes smoothly for all sorts of reasons.

So, even though it is great that you’ve got a backup solution running, my advice would be to do some regular dry runs on restoring your systems (and even better, document your recovery plan) so that if the worst happens, you know exactly what to do to get your sites live again. After all any time offline is potentially money lost.

      Thanks Dave,

And you are absolutely right. What I have since that post added is wp-backup at the SAME time running on all my sites. Not only that (I have gone a bit crazy) Few of my money making static sites have all got redundant hosting ready to go. All I need to do is change the name servers and I should be up and running.

With the dynamic sites There are few scripts being developed for me. One does the following:-

      1) Backups using backupbuddy
      2) Transfers this over to AMAZON cloud
      3) Once a month the most recent backup is downloaded onto redundant servers/hosting and extracted. Having tested this this seems to have given me relative degree of confidence.
      4) End of Every month ALL backups are downloaded onto a dedicated server, and from there onto my computer with necessary naming convention :)

It has been a pain to setup, and hopefully I will never have to use it but even then I will have backups every single backup I ever Make..

Just wondering if Backup Buddy is what I need to clone a very large WP site. Does anyone know? I’m doing a little research to make sure before I purchase…. thanks in advance!

      Elyse,

You are able to backup large files, from the point of view of backupbuddy, however some host do have a limit. I have backed sites with MySql of bigger then 1gb via backup buddy. But then just burn it into a physical backup
